Batting not betting caused Pakistan’s early World Cup exit
A fact-finding mission’s report on Pakistan’s disastrous World Cup campaign carries nothing on widespread fears that match-fixing may have been the reason behind the national team’s early exit from the 16-nation competition in March.
One of the members of a three-man Performance Evaluation Committee (PEC) formed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to probe the World Cup debacle told ‘The News’ on Wednesday that the committee’s report sent to the PCB chairman does not mention anything on match-fixing.
“The report finalised by us carries nothing on match-fixing. It focuses on the reasons behind our poor performance in the World Cup and gives suggestions on how we can avoid such disasters in the future,” he said.
The official, who requested anonymity, said that none of the players and officials questioned by the committee said anything on the match-fixing allegations.
He said that most of them suggested that Pakistan should improve the quality of their pitches and umpiring besides improving the structure of their domestic competitions.
According to him, the committee’s findings say that Pakistan were knocked out of the World Cup mainly because of poor batting.
The committee’s chairman Ijaz Butt, a former Test cricketer, would be addressing a press conference in Lahore today to announce the details of the report. Former Test players Saleem Altaf and Salahuddin Ahmed alias Sallu are the other members of the committee.
