Brian Lara, Daren Ganga win awards

The West Indies cricket captain and triple world record holder with the bat, Brian Lara was named Trinidad and Tobago’s International Cricketer of the Year, at the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board’s (T&TCB) 50th annual presentation award function here.
While Lara grabbed the award for the international cricketer, Trinidad’s current skipper, Daren Ganga, who led his country to their first ever regional competition double in the 2005-06 season, walked away with the National Senior Cricketer of the Year award.
Lara, who holds the world record for most runs in a single Test or first-class innings, last year stylishly, exceeded Australian legend Allan Border’s batting Test aggregate record of 11,174 Test runs when he slammed 226 runs to improve mark to 11,187 runs at the time. The record is currently 11,505 runs and Border backs him to even reach higher heights.
“He (Lara) is so much better than I could have hoped to be,” Border was quoted as saying after watching the Trinidadian surpassing his record on Australian soil. “He will be remembered as one of the top three or four batsmen of all time. I think he can make 13,000 Test runs.”
