Just when it seemed that cricket grounds were vanishing from the UAE, the man who once turned the desert into a cricket paradise have stepped in to save the game.

Abdul Rehman Bukhatir, best known in this part of the world for his role in making Sharjah, a major international venue in the eighties, has promised to build a ‘cricket village’ in the UAE.

According to Bukhatir’s plans, eight new grounds would be built near Sharjah later this year to compensate for the recent disappearance of cricket facilities in his country. Bukhatir has secured land near Al Dhaid where he wants to set up his dream project.

“These grounds will be easily accessible for the cricketers from Sharjah, Dubai and Ajman. It is only a 25-minute drive from all these places and it is easily accessible due to the highways connected from all the emirates,” Bukhatir was quoted as saying by a Gulf newspaper on Wednesday.

“Cricket should go on and everything needs to be done to ensure that the game is played without a break,” said Bukhatir.

According to Bukhatir, this venue will be like a village as it is located amidst beautiful date palm trees.” The grounds are set to be ready by October.
