Shane Warne has pinpointed the absence of Marcus Trescothick as the key factor behind England’s World Cup troubles.

The Somerset opener has been suffering from a stress-related illness that ended his Ashes tour prematurely and also cut short his tour to India. However, former Australia spinner Warne believes it is the attacking instincts of Trescothick that have been missing from England’s one-day play.

And Warne insists that if Trescothick is back to full fitness then he should be restored to the international side. He told Sky Sports News, “He has to sort out his issues first and he has to show them he can fulfil all the commitments — not just the flying — with international cricket and let’s hope he can get that sorted out because we just want him to get right.”

“Trescothick at the top there and maybe (Ian) Bell, (Michael) Vaughan can bat down the order and to me Strauss is a Test player rather than a one-day player, Pietersen (you put) as high as you possibly can,” he added.
