Hampshire secure Warne for key clash
English County Hampshire have been lifted by the news that the skipper Shane Warne will play in key Championship fixture with Sussex.
Hampshire had feared Warne would miss the two matches to take part in a training camp for the Australian Test team.
But the leg-spin wizard negotiated an early release and will be available for Sussex match on August 31, missing the Warwickshire match a fortnight earlier.
Director of Cricket Tim Tremlett said: “We’re very pleased Warne will play in a pivotal match of the season.”
After both teams drew last weekend, Sussex are currently at the top of the Championship, although they have played one game more, with Hampshire just 15 points behind in third.
All Australia contracted players were ordered to attend training camp, which is rumoured to incorporate some stringent physical elements, as coach John Buchanan continues his preparations for the Ashes. “We’ve had dialogue with Cricket Australia (CA), as Shane has, and we’re up-to-date with where we stand,” Tremlett confirmed.
