India and West Indies plan to play a one-day series in the United States and Canada in August and September.The agreement to play three or five one-dayers was reached during the International Cricket Council’s board meeting in Dubai last month, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said on its website.

The Indian board said last month it would play around 25 one-dayers in the next five years at neutral venues such as the United States and Europe to allow Indians living abroad to watch their team in action.

The WICB said the two boards had signed a co-operation agreement. “This includes the preparations for the hosting of the ICC Cricket World Cup by the WICB and Asia in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

“India and the West Indies would work together, assisting each other whenever possible to develop cricket in their respective countries or in their spheres of special interest i.e. North America,” the website statement said.

Indian board’s secretary Niranjan Shah said several matters still needed to be worked out.

“We are still to get the permission of the American cricket association,” he told Reuters on Friday.

The proposed series falls outside the ICC’s Future Tours Program and comes at a time of serious concern over the crowded schedule, especially for one-day internationals.

ICC president Ehsan Mani has expressed concern over player injuries and burnout.
