Isolated rooms for dope testing

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will implement strict anti-doping measures for the Champions Trophy at India in October-November and has asked for an isolated room at each venue for the purpose.

The ICC is expected to conduct random tests on urine samples of players who will take part in 10-nation tournament, to be played between Oct 7 and Nov 5. To collect these samples, the ICC has sought a room at each of match venue in Mumbai, Mohali, Ahmedabad and Jaipur.

“The ICC has asked us (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to keep one isolated room at all four venues for collecting samples,” confirmed the BCCI executive secretary Ratnakar Shetty. “But dope testing will not be BCCI’s responsibility. The ICC has a contract with the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and they will take care of this,” he added.

Rules on ‘anti-doping programme’ for the ICC-organised event like the World Cup and the Champions Trophy require the host country’s help. “This programme will, in ordinary course, be implemented in collaboration with host country’s national doping control entity. In order to ensure efficient implementation of this programme, the host country should have a WADA accredited laboratory,” says Note D6 of ICC’s 100-page compliance manual to which all ICC-event hosts have to abide.

But problem is that India does not have a single WADA accredited doping laboratory. Only one, established by the Sports Authority of India at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, is not fully equipped. So its test results are not authentic and hence not totally reliable. Urine samples will have to be flown out of India for tests.

The ICC has strengthened its anti-doping rules after Australia’s Shane Warne tested positive for a banned drug just before the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. Ace leg spinner was banned for one year by the Australian cricket board.
