Jang, Geo Group partners in Blind World Cup

The countdown for the 2006 Cricket World Cup for Blinds begins with an impressive media launching and trophy unveiling ceremony here at a local hotel on Thursday evening.

Eight teams from four continents will assemble here from December 1-16 to figure in the third World Cup that would be the biggest in magnitude held so far. The first World Cup was held in South Africa saw six countries participating while seven nations were there when it held last time in India.

An almost two feet tall golden colour trophy that was redesigned this time would be presented to winners possibly by the president of Pakistan on December 15 — the day when the final will be played.

The unveiling of trophy was followed by exhibition of coloured uniforms to be used by eight participating nations during the two-week long gala. Local models turned at stage one by one to display these colour kits.

Former Pakistan blind cricket team captain and director of the tournament, Syed Sultan Shah, hailed the contribution of Jang and Geo Group. “There are people and groups in Pakistan who are ready to sponsor us. They know we have a role to play. I thank Jang and Geo for their contribution and assistance,” he said.

Nadeem Iqbal, representative of the Jang Group, announced that Chief Executive of Jang and Geo Group Mir Shakilur Rehman has accepted to be the Patron in Chief of the World Cup. “The request was forwarded by the Blind Council and Mir Shakilur Rehman accepted the offer saying he was lucky to have been given an opportunity to act as patron of the World Cup,” he said.
