Jerome Taylor reveals Walsh inspiration
Pace bowler Jerome Taylor enhanced his growing reputation by taking 5-91 for the West Indies against Pakistan in the second Test at the Multan Cricket Stadium here on Monday.
Taylor was delighted to have helped his side into a strong position, which they built on by reaching 151-0 at the end of second day’s play. “The wicket is not conducive for fast bowling… but if you bowl in the right areas you have a chance,” said Taylor.
He cited fellow Jamaican Courtney Walsh as his inspiration, saying, “I would love to emulate his (Walsh’s) feats.” Walsh retired in 2001 after taking 519 wickets in 132 Tests, which stood as a world record for three years and still puts him fifth on all-time list.
Taylor’s victims included Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, who went early on for 31. “We all know how dangerous a batsman Inzamam is. His was a prized wicket, but (Corey) Collymore kept pressure on from other end and also bowled well,” said Taylor.
The West Indies will now look to press home their advantage with a sizeable first-innings lead as they try to get back into series after losing the opening game. “There is a lot of work to be done in this Test and we need to build on good start and press for a win,” Taylor added.
Meanwhile, Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer also acknowledged a fine effort by Taylor and Collymore. “The ball started swinging after three or four overs and that was a crucial factor. We would have liked to score more runs but the West Indies bowled very well with the new ball,” Woolmer said.
