Former all-rounder blames management for Pathan’s low confidence.

Only two months back he was your best all-rounder,” said Dev, on the sidelines of an event.

“I don’t know what the problem is, but I am surprised that an all-rounder of his calibre is not finding a place in the side. And when you have two all-rounders - Pathan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni - in the team, five bowlers could be played,” he added.

The former India captain also said that Chappell must not make comments on players’ confidence as it will dent it further rather than help in building it. “I would never say what Chappell said about a player. This will have a negative impact,” Kapil said.

Also, according to him, the team management should resist frequent chopping and changing and focus on building the confidence of players instead.

“How come experienced player likes Harbhajan and Pathan have been found sitting on the sidelines on occasions? Something is going wrong somewhere. People who have done well for the team are not playing just because of one bad performance,” Kapil said.

He also said that the team had been placing a big burden by asking him to bat at No. 3 frequently. “I would call it more responsibility than he could handle. If you ask him to bat at number three in an odd match or two, it is okay. But if you ask him to do that every five out of 10 matches, then he becomes your number three batman, which is not correct.”

Speaking about the treatment dished out to VVS Laxman, Kapil said, “Laxman too deserved to be treated well. You need experience, giving an odd chance to a youngster. And if the experienced guys have performed well and can make a difference, then why not play them?

Reality on show

NEW DELHI: The BCCI today formally announced their tie up with UK based Investors in Cricket (IIC) which will broadcast a reality TV show ‘cricket star’ that aims to cash in on the popularity of the game through a talent hunt programme.

Cricket star will screen applicants from across the country and select the best through auditions in their region. The applications would be processed in August and the winner would be identified by February.

Fraser Castellino of IIC said that they have signed a commercial agreement with the Indian board and plan to televise the programme

Castellino also said that the programme would serve as a selection trial for the board and the winner would be fast-tracked into the national side.
