Majid raises issue of Shabbir at ICC Cricket Committee meeting

Pakistan’s former Test captain Majid Khan has tabled the issue of banned pace bowler Shabbir Ahmed being given another chance by the International Cricket Council (ICC) experts to clear his bowling action.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official confirmed that the Cricket Committee meeting, held in Dubai last week, had made several recommendations, one of them apparently was about the ICC giving another chance to the PCB to have Shabbir’s action reviewed.

Shabbir was banned last December by the ICC for 12 months for having an illegal bowling action. The ban came after he was reported twice for his action in 2005. The PCB filed an appeal on his behalf against the ban in January this year but a Bowling Action Review group (BRG), formed by the ICC, rejected it and upheld the ban.

“Majid did a very good job of representing Pakistan in the Cricket Committee. However, now all the recommendations made by the Cricket Committee will go to the chief executive officers’ meeting of the member boards for ratification.”

“And if the CEOs ratify any or all of the recommendations made by the Cricket Committee then they would be discussed and approved by the Executive Board during its meeting in July,” the official explained.

Majid is also Pakistan’s nominee for the post of the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee, a position that has been held by former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar for a while now. “I really don’t know what happened about the Gavaskar issue. But yes Majid is our nomination and we’ve informed the ICC about it.”

The elections for the CC head would be held in July during the Executive Board meeting. The official maintained that the PCB knew any chances of Shabbir getting another review of his action before the completion of his ban were slim but efforts were being made to convince the ICC to allow him another chance on the basis of the improvement brought about in his action by former Test pacer Sarfraz Nawaz who worked for over a month with him.
