Miandad’s Insights
There is no doubt that if anybody understands the ins and outs of cricket, and also the Pakistani mindset with proven experience both in playing and coaching, then it is the former legendry Pakistani batsman, Javed Miandad. He not only has done wonders for the Pakistani team, but has also done coaching at very crunch moments. Though, as the culture goes, he also remained surrounded by many controversies, but nonetheless, he is the authority on the matter.
Once again, he has come forward and has given some valuable suggestions, which PCB should hear and try to follow wholeheartedly and with vigor, and should rise to the personal egos. Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board, Dr. Nasim Ashraf, also shed away his stubborn shell, and should listen to former player, as it might do something good for him.
Miandad has said that the batsman who will play with cool mind and with passions will be successful in the one day cricket. He said that emotions don’t do any good in ODI, and they only harm the tempo and the credibility of the player. He also said that PCB should accept this bitter truth that Pakistan hasn’t got any opener after Saeed Anwar, and its very unfortunate not only for the team, but also for the country.
Opening has remained a very painful issue for the Pakistani team in recent years. Pakistan has tried many combinations and everyone failed royally. The problem is that Pakistan tried the same vicious cycle of Taufeeq Umar, Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez, Yasir Hamid, and Kamran Akmal, and everyone was as pathetic and disgusting as the other. Miandad is right when he says that opener is a specialized job, and an opener knows that he is an opener, whether he is at the domestic scene or at the national level.
Opening batsman have also come from bottom to top, and it cannot happen as it is happening now, that you just import an elusive batsman from nowhere and make him opener and also the vice-captain of the team. In Pakistan, an opener comes from top to bottom, fails, and then get out of the team. Miandad also said that PCB should strengthen the coach, and make him a father figure for the team. He also suggested to board that they should treat all the players equally. He also said that there is no quality and consistency in the team and it can only be achieved by promoting a competitive environment among the team players.
