Mixed Reations Over ICL
Indian Cricket League (ICL) has suddently set the international cricket on fire, not in terms of any sort of revolution of the game, but in terms of plethora of statements from former players, media, sports analysts, board officials, current players and from the common fans.
The board which has been most affected by the rebel league is the Pakistan Cricket Board, as its big names have joined the ICL. They include Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq and Imran Farhat. Though they all cannot be said best for the agile format of the game, which ICL intends to play, they are still big guns for their teams.
Many former players in Pakistan have said it that there is no harm in playing for ICL and it would only bring financial support for the players. They are also saying that ICL is not rebel and its not hijacking the international cricket and all the apprehensions are baseless. Pakistan’s former captain, Asif Iqbal who was also a main proponent of Kerry Packer in 70’s has also supported the ICL and have said that like Kerry Packer brought the money and prosperity to the game of cricket, ICL will also follow the suit and would only benefit the game and players.
Ramiz Raja, Asif Iqbal, Javed Miandad, and Arif Abbassi who support everything which irks the PCB also supporting the ICL idea and there argument is that players should have right to earn some extra bucks and as they are professionals, so board shouldnt and couldn’t stop the players from pursuing their profession.
Its true that Kerry Packer introduced a new level of interest in the game and it innovative the game in new directions plus it added the commercial value to it. ICL is also giving out huge sums of money to the players like Kerry Packer but the thing is that Kerry Packer was a professional thingie and this ICL is just yet another affair which is even marred by the Indian incompetency and intrigue from the outset. There is great deal of difference between Kapil Dev of ICL and the Linton Taylor of Kerry Packer. Even any major Indian player hasn’t given any respect to the so-called neo-Kerry Packer affair.
