Pakistan cricket team returns home from World Cup
Pakistan’s cricketers will not have to worry about their safety when they return home following their early elimination from the World Cup and the murder of coach Bob Woolmer, team spokesman Pervez Mir said on Tuesday.
The team was flying back to Pakistan on Tuesday evening after staying at a hotel near London’s Heathrow Airport for two days after leaving the World Cup in the West Indies. “People are disappointed and there are always certain people who are a bit over the top, but I’m sure the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have made all the necessary arrangements for the players and there is no reason for concern, especially when you go back to your own country,” Mir said as the team prepared to board its flight.
Pakistan were stunned by Ireland in the first round of the World Cup in one of the biggest upsets in cricket history. The following day, Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room in Kingston, Jamaica. Police say he was strangled.
Mir dismissed suggestions that the players were suspects in the murder investigation. “We were part of the same inquiry as everybody else so of course we were questioned,” he said. Mir praised Woolmer while dismissing claims that the coach argued with captain Inzamam-ul-Haq.
“He was a very good man, a good coach and a father figure,” Mir said. “Let’s remember him for all those things rather than tarnish his memory,” he added. Two Pakistan players —Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf — took earlier flights home.
