Pakistan Cricket: Whats Next
An oft quoted Chinese proverb is “A crisis is an opportunity”. The current ignominious debacle in Pakistan’s cricket when it hit the rock bottom after being thrashed by a minnow like Ireland in the world cup result in a loud hue and cry across Pakistan. Everybody was demanding blood and heads.
Initially the captain, chairman of board and selectors all refused to step down defiantly and shamelessly, but then the pressure was too much and they had to resign. Now what is required is the clean sweep in cricket. This crisis has presented us with a unique and rare chance to mend the ways of cricket, if we want any glory and glee from it. Ad hoc-ism should be ended once and for all. An elected cricket board comprising of senior cricketers should be made, who themselves elect a chairman, with solid cricketing background. There should be a constitution for cricket and it should be viable and implemented sternly.
The cricket team should be built-up from scratch. If we again start rotating openers which have been tried for the previous 4 years and if we again put Younis Khan, Kamran Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Razzaq, Rana, Rao, Shoaib Malik in the team, the things will not change. If we persist with the current players, there would be no improvement as they carry the same spirit and approach as Inzamam. They are internally weak and timid. They have no mental power and depth. They have got their own vested interests and fears. The team’s infrastructure should be built-up from scratch, from zero. All the faces should be new and fresh. Mohammad Yousaf, Mohammad Asif and Umer Gul can be retained but no one else.
Its the psyche of Pakistanis that we always work when their is a stick over our head. As most of the players don’t have any considerable education background and up-bringing, they are unable to act professionally and with self-assurance. Pakistan need a foreign coach with certain qualifications. The qualifications include that he must be very disciplined and strict. Very professional. Have a massive cricketing record and a reputation at international level. We don’t need yes-man tamed by captain. We need a coach who steers the ship of Pakistan’s cricket from the turbulent waters.
