Pakistan could expect a bit of tough challenge from the minnows Scotland in a historic One-day International match in Edinburgh today (Tuesday).

Scotland, who are counted among the weaker teams with international status, were set for a major boost when it emerged that their star all-rounder Dougie Brown could be released by Warwickshire to face Pakistan in the ODI.

According to media reports, the county side have a Twenty20 cup match at Northants coinciding with Scotland’s first full international since being awarded top status but Cricket Scotland believe that the 37-year-old Brown could be given leave to travel north instead.

“We are waiting to hear if Dougie will be made available to us, and if so, he can be included in the squad as a replacement for Navdeep Poonia who isn’t being released by Warwickshire,” a team insider was quoted as saying by a Scottish newspaper on Monday.

If Brown does gain a 17th cap, it will be his first appearance in the national colours for almost a year and the latest twist in a career which includes nine One-day Internationals for England before becoming Scots eligible again.

One more good news for Scotland is that their 1999 World Cup hero Gavin Hamilton has recently hit top form. Hamilton warmed up for the resumption of his One-day International career in the finest style, compiling a superb century against Leicestershire and pinching a record from Rahul Dravid along the way. Hamilton scored 131 off 128 balls.

The riposte sent Scotland into the ODI against Pakistan assured that the native batsmen could score heavily in the absence of overseas help. The ODI against Scotland would mark the start of Pakistan’s marathon tour of England. Inzamam-ul-Haq’s men would continue their bid to warm up for the first Test scheduled to get underway from July 13 at Lord’s by playing in two three-day games against Leicestershire and England A.
