Pakistan name team for cricket World Cup for Blind
Defending champions Pakistan on Saturday named a 17-member team plus six officials for the 3rd Cricket World Cup for the Blind to be played here in the Pakistan capital from December 3 to 16.
The Chairman of the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council, Agha Shaukat Ali, and Programme Director of the upcoming event, Syed Sultan Shah, released the names which were finalised by Chairman Selection Committee-cum-Coach Nafees Ahmed.
The selected players were divided into the following three categories: Mohammad Waqas, Mohammad Shahbaz, Anwar Ali, Amir Ishfaq, Noor Quresh, Mohammad Waseem Khan (B1, Totally Blind), Abdul Razzaq (captain), Masood Jan, Zeeshan Abbasi, Mohammad Irfan, Muzaffar Ali (B2, Partially Blind), Mohammad Fayaz (vice-captain), Syed Adnan Ahmad, Shariq Yaseen, Mohammad Akram, Tahir Ali (wicket-keeper) and Tariq Samuel (B3, Partially Sighted).
The officials appointed with the team are: Mrs Perveen Aftab Alam Khan (manager), Khalid Mahmood Malik (assistant manager), Nafees Ahmed (coach), Mohammad Dawood (assistant coach), Tariq Mahmood (physio) and Mohammad Jamil (trainer).
Also present at the press conference were representatives of sponsors Jang Group, Nadeem Iqbal, and Hassan Minto.
The opening ceremony of the 3rd Cricket World Cup for the Blind will be held here at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex, on December 3.
The eight participating teams will start arriving in the capital city of Pakistan on December 1 while they will have practice sessions at various venues the next day (December 2).
The venues selected for the tournament, being held under the auspices of the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council, are F-9 Park, PAF Ground E-9, Shalimar Cricket Ground and Diamond Cricket Ground.
The teams to compete in the tournament are Pakistan, India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England and West Indies.
The semifinals of the tournament will be played on December 13 and 14 and the final on December 16.
Pakistan will play four of their round-robin matches at F-9 Park — against Australia on December 4, against South Africa on December 6, against India on December 9 and against England on December 11.
Pakistan will clash against New Zealand at the PAF Ground, E-9, on December 8 and against West Indies at the Shalimar Cricket Ground, F-6 on December 5.
Matches will be held daily with the exception of rest days of December 7 and December 15.
The top four teams on the points table will enter the last-4 stage with the top team to play the no.4 team in the first semifinal and no.2 and no.3 teams to clash in the second semifinal.
