Pakistan retreats on Gavaskar issue

Hours after a news report from [tag]Pakistan[/tag] suggested that the PCB was ‘‘not very satisfied’’ with Indian legend Sunil [tag]Gavaskar[/tag] as [tag]ICC[/tag] cricket committee chief, the officialdom scrambled to cap the controversy.

‘‘It is no secret that Pakistan is not very satisfied with the working of the former Indian captain as head of the committee and they feel the time has come now for a change,’’ The News quoted an unnamed PCB official as saying.

The report added that Pakistan is not impressed with Gavaskar’s ‘‘behind-the-scene role in influencing key decisions within the ICC’’.

The immediate provocation, apparently, was the ICC panel selecting Javagal Srinath as ‘‘part-time’ match referee, ignoring the four names suggested by Pakistan—Talat Ali, Col (Retd) Naushad Ali, Pervez Sajjad and Hasan Jamil.

Officially, however, the PCB denied expressing any disappointment. ‘‘If any official were to give any statement without confirming with us, we cannot do anything,’’ said PCB director Abbas Zaidi.

No wonder Pakis retreated on Gavaskar issue. They are infact an apologetic nation who cannot take stand on even genuine issues. Each one in this nation is trying to save his own interest so principles are compromised easily. God bless Pakis.
