Pakistani Media and Cricket
Almost free media explosion is one of the few best things happened to Pakistan in recent years. The opening up of Pakistani media has created new opportunities and more challenges for everyone but in the case of reporting Pakistan cricket the challenge sounds even more pronounced.
There are almost a dozen cricket related shows being telecast round the clock on various channels on daily basis engaging various previous board officials and test players. In a country where playing eleven has the history of tense relationships and professional jealousies in almost all teams who played together, it is hardly expected from them to take an unbiased and independent position rather than always corner the cricket administration in the country to task.
One of the favorite target of cricket programs at media is to bash the cricket authorities with respect to their treatment with the associations in the decision making and other affairs. There is no significant role of associations in development and capacity development of cricket infrastructure in the country. No wonder why then Pakistani media takes them well to task and scandalize their each and every move.
They should first have the legitimacy and mandate which could only be gained by democratizing the board to start getting it. Otherwise the tragic incidents like the mysterious death of the former Pakistani coach Bob Woolmer during the world cup in Caribbean this year, doping scandal of Mohammad Asif and Shoaib Akhtar, and the sad exit of Pakistan from the world cup 2007 will portray an image that their is no control and future of cricket in the Pakistan.
