PCB to announce new contracts for players
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would announce a new performance-based central contract system for its leading players early next month, a top PCB official said on Wednesday.
Zakir Khan, PCB’s Director of Operations, told this correspondent in a telephonic interview from Lahore that experts are currently working on a new contract system and the Board would be able to finalise it by the end of this month.
“The Board is working on finalising a new central contract system for the players with the help of experts and we would announce it next month,” said Zakir a former Pakistan medium pacer who played two Tests in the eighties.
The PCB suspended the central contracts of its players following Pakistan’s disastrous World Cup campaign in the Caribbean. It was one of the major decisions taken by the Board in the aftermath of the World Cup with its chairman saying that the new contracts to be given to the players would be based on performance.
The Board, later, decided to get overseas help to finalise a new, more transparent and performance-based contract system. It has obtained copies of contracts issued by Australian, Indian, South African and England cricket boards. Some of the Board officials are now reviewing those documents in a bid to come out with the best system to pay the players.
The PCB has suspended the central contracts awarded to 20 players after the national team’s shock World Cup exit. Zakir refrained from giving any details on the sort of contract system to be finalised by the PCB. He, however, said that some players who were included in the previous list could be excluded and a few fresher faces can get inducted in the new one.
