PCB undecided about Abu Dhabi tri-nation event
Uncertainty looms over Pakistan’s participation in the Abu Dhabi Tri-Nation cricket event proposed to be held in late September. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Director Cricket Operations Saleem Altaf has said that PCB may consider participation provided attractive financial package was offered.
PCB Director Board Operations Abbas Zaidi had recently termed Pakistan’s participation highly unlikely due to shortage of time.
When the PCB Chairman Shaharyar M Khan was contacted in England, he said that the PCB was still undecided about the Abu Dhabi event. “No final decision has been taken as yet as there are a few critical issues involved.
“First it would be the holy month of Ramadan and secondly Pakistani players are currently undertaking a very tough and strenuous tour that would last till mid September this year and every one knows how many injuries the Pakistan team is suffering from, “ Khan said.
Khan further said “The Pakistan team would be back from England by September 15 and then Pakistan also has to take part in the ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament starting from October 7 in India. We have to ensure that the already injury hit and tired Pakistan team gets proper rest ahead of the ICC Trophy.â€
To a question the PCB chief said that “I will have a meeting with the Pakistan team players and coach in the next couple of days in England before making any final decision regarding participation in the Abu Dhabi three-nation event.â€
The PCB has been harshly criticised for its lack of vision and planning that resulted in injuries to a number of key players like Shoaib Akhtar, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Asif, Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan and others that weakened the Pakistan team in the ongoing Pak-England series.
Pakistan team coach Bob Woolmer in media interviews has admitted that Shoaib was asked not to play against England in Pakistan due to a stress fracture but he refused to listen and the team management had to play him. Something that indicates the PCB succumbing to player power.
