PCB wants Akram for training camp
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is trying to bring back legendary former pacer Wasim Akram for a brief training camp for upcoming fast bowlers in Lahore next month.
A PCB official told ‘The News’ on Monday that the Board is talking with Akram to confirm his presence at the camp for pacers that is tentatively scheduled to get underway at the National Cricket Academy from May 26.
“Wasim Akram is one of our greatest fast bowlers and we are sure that his input (in the camp) would be highly beneficial for our promising young pacers,” said Zakir Khan, PCB’s Director of Cricket Operations.
Zakir said that the camp will be held for a brief period adding that the Board is confident that Akram will help out the fast bowlers during the camp. “He (Akram) also came to a similar camp last year and his input was very helpul,” said Zakir. “In fact he was one who helped us identify Sohail Tanvir as an exciting new talent at a previous camp for fast bowlers,” he added.
Sohail, a left-arm medium pacer, was drafted into the Pakistan squad last year on Akram’s recommendation. The lanky bowler turned out to be one of the success stories of the inaugural World Twenty20 championship held in South Africa last September. Since then Sohail has cemented his place in both the Test and one-day squads.
Zakir said that the PCB is hoping that Akram will help improve a couple of more talented young pacers, who have recently played international cricket for Pakistan. Wahab Riaz is one such bowler. “Wahab has shown a lot of promise on his debut and we believe that with a little help from Wasim, he can become as asset for us.”
