Ponting warns Panesar of Aussie aggression
The Australian cricket team captain Ricky Ponting has warned England’s new cult hero Monty Panesar that Australia will look to hit him hard if he appears Down Under for the Ashes.
Panesar is now expected to make the trip Down Under for the Ashes in Australia, but Ponting has warned he will face a hot reception from the Aussie batsmen.
The Australia skipper says that the home batsmen will be looking to get on top of Panesar early on, if he makes the Ashes side. “The left-handers, especially Langer and Hayden, the way they generally play spin is to be fairly aggressive,” Ponting told. “But at other times, we won’t be able to be. We’ll try to make some sort of impact on him early on, hopefully a positive one, and we don’t let him get on top of us,” he remarked.
Ponting did have words of praise for Panesar, who in contrast to the usual breed of England spinner is much more of an attacking threat. “He didn’t look like he was scared to throw the ball up a little bit and actually try and get you out,” Ponting said.
“A lot of the Englishmen over the years have been a bit guilty of just firing the ball in a bit too fast, and you can see with him he uses the air a lot more,” revealed Ponting.
