Prince leads while Smith and Steyn recover
Ashwell Prince will lead the South Africans in their tour opener against Western Australia at the WACA on Thursday. Graeme Smith (elbow), Dale Steyn (hamstring) and Paul Harris (thumb) will miss the match as they set their sights on being fit for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on Wednesday.
The coach Mickey Arthur has said the moves are “precautionary” and that Smith and Steyn will appear in the two-day game against a Western Australian team from Friday. Smith had a cortisone injection last week while Steyn has been building up his pace after suffering a hamstring problem in the series against Bangladesh.
Western Australia have picked the Adam Voges, Brett Dorey, Shaun Marsh and Luke Ronchi, who all have one-day international experience. While the contest on Thursday is 50 overs a side, the match will not be played under normal limited-overs conditions.
Both teams will use 12 men and there are no limitations on the number of overs that can be bowled or fielding restrictions. The side batting second will stay on the field until 50 overs have been delivered whether they have passed the first-innings total or not.
