Former South African player Jonty Rhodes has agreed to accept a two weeks coaching assignment with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) before taking charge as [tag]South Africa[/tag]’s fielding coach on a full time basis.
A PCB official said that Rhodes had indicted to them he had got clearance from the United Board of South Africa to take up a two weeks coaching assignment in Pakistan. “He should most probably join us later this month and work with the players leaving for England in the national camp,†the official said.
Pakistan had approached the former South African player to help improve the fielding standards of the Pakistani players prior to the England tour but he made it clear he would have to seek clearance from the UCBSA who has also offered him a coaching assignment with the national team for the 2007 World Cup.
Rhodes who was in [tag]Dubai[/tag] this weekend told reporters there that he would be taking over as fielding coach of the South African team till the 2007 World Cup. “I have had talks with the South African Cricket Board. Both my assignments are getting finalised,†he said.
“The South African Cricket Board has no objection to my proposed assignment with the Pakistan cricket team as it is only for two weeks,†he said. Elaborating on the South African team assignment, Rhodes said: “I am to be assigned as the fielding coach of the South African team for the Champions Trophy. I am likely to be involved in the India-Pakistan-South Africa triangular one-day series too.â€
Pakistan had asked coach Bob Woolmer to convince Rhodes, known as one of the finest fielders of his time, to take up the short assignment. Woolmer was coach of the South Africa team during the time Rhodes played for his country.
