Samuels comes under ICC scan again
West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels is to be investigated for possible contact with a bookmaker during a one-day tour to India in January.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday that Samuels had been reported by its anti-corruption and security unit for “allegations of appropriate activity” and ordered the West Indies Cricket Board to investigate.
Samuels will be investigated for possible breaches of regulations regarding receiving money, benefit or other reward which could bring him or cricket into disrepute, and for engaging in any conduct which is prejudicial to the interest of the sport.
The WICB will report to the ICC by January 31, 2008. If the ICC is unhappy with the WICB’s investigation or its recommendations, it can order further investigation and harsher punishment.
Marlon Samuels played at the World Cup earlier this year and went on the West Indies’ tour to England. The ICC board has also decided to increase the number of umpires on its elite panel from 10 to 12.
