Scotland level series with five-wicket win

Half-centuries from three Scotland batsmen helped the hosts beat Canada by five wickets at Mannofield Park in Aberdeen. Chasing a target of 250, Gavin Hamilton, Ryan Watson and Neil McCallum guided the chase superbly to secure victory in the 48th over and level the series 1-1.

Canada’s batsmen had chased down a large total on Tuesday but they were unable to reproduce a powerful performance after winning the toss. Their top-order batsmen struggled and Gordon Drummond struck thrice with the new ball to reduce the visitors to 28 for 3.

The middle-order batsmen rallied around Sunil Dhaniram and revived the innings. Dhaniram was the rock, scoring 92 before he was caught of Alasdair Evans, and he received support from Ashish Bagai and Khurram Chohan who made 31 and 35 respectively. Canada eventually recovered to finish on 250 for 9 with Drummond being the stand-out bowler, having taken 4 for 41.

Scotland’s chase began badly with Fraser Watts being run out in the first over without facing a ball. Hamilton, however, help up one end, even after Navdeep Poonia fell for 10, and added 96 for the third wicket with Watson. Hamilton eventually fell for 59 but Watson found a steady partner in McCallum and the pair’s 86-run partnership sealed the game for Scotland. Watson was eventually stumped for 74 but McCallum was unbeaten on 79 when the winning runs were scored.
