Shoaib Akhtar leaves for England
Injured pacer Shoaib Akhtar has flown to England to get a second opinion from knee specialists on an injury that is threatening to end his World Cup dreams.
According to sources close to the player, Shoaib has been told by local doctors that he might have to undergo surgery on his knee which got injured during the second Test match against South Africa last month.
Hoping to play in next month’s World Cup, Shoaib decided to undergo fresh tests in England and take a second opinion from specialists before taking a final decision on this latest injury to rock his international career.
Interestingly, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials were completely unaware of this latest development. When contacted, PCB’s Director Communications Dr Ahsan Malik told this correspondent that he has no news on Shoaib’s trip to England. “If Shoaib needs any medical treatment abroad, the PCB would send him there,” he said.
Shoaib, 31, was snubbed by selectors while naming the touring party for South Africa in December but was later rushed to Port Elizabeth after medium pacer Umar Gul suffered from an ankle injury.
Shoaib took four wickets to set up Pakistan’s win in the second Test but failed to complete the match after tearing a hamstring muscle. He returned home and later found out that he was also carrying a knee injury that put his World Cup hopes in doubt.
