Shoaib misconduct trial verdict due today

akhterA disciplinary committee appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to hear cases of misconduct filed against fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar will announce its verdict today (Thursday).

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official told ‘The News’ that the three-man committee met on Wednesday night and will give its decision on Shoaib’s case after hearing out the enigmatic pacer and several key witnesses.

Shoaib, 32, is facing sanctions ranging from a five-match suspension and a hefty fine to a six-month ban if found guilty of misconduct.

Several cases of indiscipline were filed against Shoaib, who was sent back from South Africa last month by the team management after being found guilty of hitting fellow pacer Mohammad Asif during a dressing room brawl in Johannesburg. After returning home, Shoaib addressed a press conference and claimed that teammate Shahid Afridi provoked him.

It seems that the only thing that can save Shoaib from strict sanctions is the fact that Pakistan are facing a shortage of wicket-taking bowlers. Their top strike bowler Mohammad Asif injured his elbow in the current Test against South Africa and is a doubtful starter for the ODI series as well as the crunch tour of India begging early next month.

However, a PCB official made it clear that Shoaib’s trial would be fair and the player would be punished if found guilty of misconduct.
