Sidebottom waits on scan results
Ryan Sidebottom, the England fast bowler, could be heading home early after he was sent for another scan on the side strain which has prevented his participation in the one-day series. Sidebottom sustained an Achilles injury during England’s Stanford Super Series in Antigua, and has since developed a side strain which could yet rule him out of England’s tour.
“It’s an injury to his side so we’re looking to see if there’s a tear there and if there is we’ll have to decide how long that takes,” said Peter Moores. “If it is a tear that could put him out for the rest of the tour.
“He’s had it for a while. He bowled a short spell and got a little pain in his side and it’s been there ever since. We got one scan done but the pictures weren’t very good and with the other scan yesterday, the pictures were much better so we’re expecting a pretty clear diagnosis.”
Sidebottom spearheaded England’s attack for a year, surprising many with his consistent pace and aggressive line. However, he struggled in the home series against South Africa in the summer, and there were indications that his first year as a fully-fledged Test cricketer had begun to take its toll on his body.
Should Moores and England decide on calling up a replacement, it is likely they will delve into their Performance Programme squad which includes Saj Mahmood, Tim Bresnan and Liam Plunkett.
