Smith doubtful for Afro-Asia Cup
South African captain Graeme Smith is unlikely to feature in next month’s Afro-Asia Cup in India after having undergone knee surgery in Cape Town earlier this week.
Shane Jabaar, South African team’s physiotherapist has said that Smith had to undergo surgery on May 15, after twisting his left knee taking a catch during the match against England at the recent World Cup in the West Indies.
“Graeme was treated extensively before the semifinal and probably regained about 95 percent of his function for that game,” Jabaar said in a statement issued on Friday.
“Graeme will now undergo an intensive rehabilitation programme and based on his response to the programme, we will be able to indicate when he’ll be able to get back to practice and then play,” he explained.
He added, “We’re not intending to accelerate his return to playing cricket until we are satisfied he has fully recovered. We will have a check up with the surgeon and will take into consideration how Graeme’s body has reacted to the surgery.”
Smith said, “I am experiencing some pain after the surgery to my left knee and will follow medical advice before making any decisions to play again. We have another trying season ahead and preparation for that is priority. I want to make sure I have fully recovered from the operation to my knee.”
Most of the top South African players would be featuring in the three-match Afro Asia Cup to be played in Bangalore and Chennai from June 6-10.
