South Africa Disappoints PCB
International Cricket Council managed to convince South Africa to host tri-nation series and invite Pakistan as a compensation for the rolled-back Champion’s Trophy in Pakistan, due to the security concerns, and because South Africa was the first team to quit from the tournament. But now Cricket South Africa has refused to host the tournament.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has informed the PCB that it will not be able to hold the proposed tri-series because of multiple reasons. CSA was unable to sign a broadcasting deal for the event and was finally forced to decide against staging it when the country’s leading cricketers said they didn’t want to take part in any such event following a marathon tour of England. It is also learned that South Africa won’t either be coming to Pakistan next year.
Where this news has put the PCB in hot waters, it has also rendered huge relief to the Protean players. South Africa coach Mickey Arthur said a proposed limited-overs series with Pakistan will not happen, providing a welcome break for his exhausted players. He said that all the players were extremely relieved over this decision by the board.
Shafqat Naghmi, PCB’s chief operating officer said that the PCB is now mulling other options. He said that the Board may hold a three-nation series in Abu Dhabi but is unsure whether top teams will participate in it.
