Twenty20 World Cup : South Africa vs New Zealand Match Review
Host of the Twenty20 world cup of 2007 took a nation-wide sigh of relief after a scintillating fourth-wicket partnership between Mornè Morkel and Justin Kemp enabled South Africa to defeat Black Caps by six wickets. As a result of this match, England was eliminated from the tournament.
New Zealand was flying courtesy to a fine start by Brendon McCullum and Lou Vincent. Vincent played it with lots of sense and presence of mind. His innings was a spectacular display of how an opener should play in the Twenty20. He was bowled by Van der Wath at 32. McCullum was also a fine blend of aggression and common sense. His 2 sixes and 3 fours helped him reached to 38, when he was ousted from the pitch by Morkel. Morkel was the one who also got rid of Taylor and Styris in a jiffy. Jacob Oram and Shane Bond were also hapless in front of Morkel Mania. McMillan made it through the innings and remained unbeaten at 48.
153 as a target wasnt supposed to put much pressure on Protean batsmen, but Twenty20 is a funny game. Graeme Smith was the first casuality very early on, very soon followed by AB de Villiers. The deafening silence of the crowd with blaring music was too much to bear for South African batsmen afterwards. When the superstar Gibbs also went cheaply, sobs were in the air. Justin Kemp was livid at these sobs. He converted sobs into sixers. His 6 grand sixers, coupled with 6 smashing fours, changed the face of the game. With the support from cute Boucher and veteran Pollock, Kemp upset the tummies of Kiwis, that ultimately resulted in the Kiwi loss of the game. Kemp was still asking for blood, when South Africa crossed the Kiwi 153.
