Waqar Younis quits as Pakistan bowling coach

Former Pakistan Test cricketer Waqar Younis has resigned as the national team’s bowling coach just before his departure to join the national team squad in South Africa for the Tests and one-day series.

Waqar, on Saturday, confirmed that he had informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that he is quitting as the member of team’s coaching staff.

Waqar was a part of coach Bob Woolmer’s coaching staff and was scheduled to fly to South Africa to join the national team. Waqar’s decision to resign comes days after the PCB reappointed another former Test cricketer, Mushtaq Ahmed, as the team’s assistant coach.

Waqar, whose tenure with the team was till the end of the World Cup in the West Indies, said that he was reluctant to go with the national team to South Africa because of Mushtaq’s appointment.

He said that Mushtaq was a bowler himself and appointing him for the national team as an assistant coach meant that the team had two bowling coaches.

Waqar felt that there was no need for him in the team and was quitting because of this reason.
