Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne wants to come out of his one-day retirement and play in the World Cup in the Caribbean next year, his coach John Buchanan has said.

Buchanan said Warne, who called halt to his one-day career after the last World Cup in 2003, has held talks with captain Ricky Ponting and the national selectors during the series in South Africa and Bangladesh.

Buchanan, who led the Aussies for their third World Cup triumph three years ago, said Test cricket’s leading wicket-taker would have make up his mind on the issue fast though.

“Ricky, myself and [chairman of selectors] Andrew Hilditch have all had discussions with Shane about the World Cup,” Buchanan was quoted as saying in the Australian media on Sunday.

“There needs to be a commitment or otherwise from him. Either he makes himself available in terms of the team moving forward with its plans, or not.

“And then the selectors will have some decisions on their plate from there. Shane spoke to us in South Africa, and then again in Bangladesh.”

Warned decided to end his one-day career at the 2003 World Cup which, however, he never played as he returned a positive drug test just before the event and was banned for an year from all forms of the game.

Australia are also about to issue annual contracts to their players next month.

“There are a lot of considerations for him, mainly in terms of the longevity of his career,” Buchanan said.

“He needs to come to a conclusion. With the contract meetings coming up, I imagine it will be one of the topics for discussion.”
