Wednesday News Bytes
- Misbah-ul-Haq, the zero of Twenty20 world cup got place in test squad of Pakistan after long four years, after a good overall performance in Twenty20 world cup. 33 year old Misbah played his last test in 2003 against Bangladesh and scored 13 runs. Before that he has made 120 runs in 5 test matches with the meager average of 13.33. He is carrying lots of pressure in this series and his whole career, whatever left of it, hinges upon this series.
- Karachiites didn’t pay much attention to the test match being held in their fantastic city between home team and South Africa. On the first two days of the match, there were virtually no spectators, and hardly handful of 60 to 70 people came to watch the match, which was rather monotonous and boring like hell. Mostly there were security officials, who snooze on the benches.
- Ashwell Prince has been nominated as the next vice-captain for Protean team in the place of Kallis who resigned from the post after being dropped from the Twenty20 squad. Ashwell has been nominated up till next April, whereas for One Day Internationals against Pakistan, South Africa has nominated Justin Kemp as vice captain.
- Mohammad Yousuf’s status about the rest of the test series against South Africa is dangling, as PCB is playing back-door channel negotiations with Indian Cricket League to release Yousuf without going into legal proceedings, whereas Yousuf says that he has not faced any problem from ICL side, and he is not playing in the first test match because he hasn’t played for some months and now wants some time to regain his fitness and match practice.
- Srilanka beat England in the first ODI of the series by the huge margin of 119 runs. Srilanka batted first and made 269 runs at the loss of 7 wickets in their alloted 50 overs. Jayasuriya made 41, Tharanga 40, and Jayawardena made 66, while English team proved to be a house of cards and the whole team was finished at 150. Farveez Maharoof became man of the match after taking 4 wickets.
- Disciplinary committee has started hearing the case of Shoaib Akhtar, but this time it is for sure that Shoaib is going to face some tough music. It is reported that chairman PCB and high-ups have decided to give him an exemplary punishment, and it is expected that he would face a 6 months ban with a heavy fine, which could range form 300,000 to 500,000.
