Why on Earth this Happened?
When just after the South African tour and before the start of world cup 2007, former Pakistani fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz bursted that the dismal plight of Pakistan cricket demands the withdrawal of team from the world cup so that to save the passionate fans of country from a great trauma. Even he would be shocked to see the shameful exit of national team from the mega event.
In retrospect, the list of factors behind this ignominious and un-forgettable defeat is long and bitter. The events leading to the world cup were all the signs of some bad thing about to happen. No team, even Australia can win any tournament lest the world cup with a captain like Inzamam-ul-Haq. He might be one of the greatest batsman of all time some years back, but he was never a tactically-sensible and intelligently-strategic skipper. Instead, he literally demolished the cricket in the country. He is one of the gigantic display of in-competency, and dumbness in today’s world. Other salient features included selection of team, no openers, no. 3 batsman like Younis Khan, keeper like Kamran Akmal, no bowlers and the below par fielding. There was also the intrigues and conspiracies surfacing like termination of Waqar Younis as bowling coach, Shoaib Akhtar issue, Kaneria issue, Shabbir issue, Yasir Hameed issue and the list goes on. Then don’t forget the nobody-chairman cricket board, who hasn’t played anything international ever.
Up till when we will continue to hide the debacles and protect the personalities behind them? This practice should end and end for good. Players or officials responsible for the causes of the failure should be sternly dealt so that no body dares to play with people’s hearts again. If people like Inzamam would just go home after resigning and amassing billions of rupees for doing nothing and hurting people’s feelings, this thing will carry on. Accountability should be done for every player in this squad and also it should be extended to the selectors and cricket board.
To not to repeat this suck-up again, ad-hoc from the cricket board should be shunned. There should be a cricket constitution, elected cricket governing bodies, product first-class cricket in which quality not quantity of participating team should be paramount. The last but not the least step should be that a player who performs should remain in team, otherwise he must go home. And please if Younis Khan is the last man left in Pakistan to captain Pakistani team, then suspend the team for the time, until a captain is found.
