Yorkshire await arrival of Younis
Pakistan cricket team’s vice-captain Younis Khan’s much anticipated arrival in the English cricket county Yorkshire after the World Cup in the Caribbean is exciting all of Yorkshire.
Younis is no stranger to scoring runs at the home of Yorkshire cricket.
His arrival is a step in the right direction for Yorkshire as a club, where involving county’s Asian population fosters harmonious community relations and have significant impact on the makeup of future playing staff.
His wages in Yorkshire will be supported by the Asian Business Development Network (ABDN).
Arshad Chaudhry, the ABDN president said, “He is a tremendous cricketer and our members welcome his involvement in promoting their products and services. We will hopefully work with him to put across positive messages, not only about cricket but on living together and bringing harmony to community.”
The Yorkshire County Cricket Club was criticised in the past for their failure to engage large ethnic minority population. ABDN have played a crucial role in bringing Younis to Yorkshire.
Chaudhry said: “The club spoke to us to ensure there was support from the community in terms of funding.
“We thought it as a very good idea as Yorkshire have traditionally been closed shop sort of old fashioned club where ethnic minorities had very little part to play, in playing and people watching games.”
The negative attention certain members of the Muslim community gained in recent times had negative impact on race relations.
Chaudhry is conscious of: “After July 7 incidents, which haven’t gone down very well with the ethnic community here, particularly with the Muslim community, we want to use our association with Younis as a positive message to give to whole community. It’s important that we say we are here as a part of the whole community, playing active part.”
