You can’t guarantee anything, says Lawson

Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson says the potential for political turbulence in the country makes it impossible to guarantee security for Australia’s cricketers in March.

Players are nervous about the prospect of touring Pakistan and Andrew Symonds raised the issue of a boycott after a suicide bomb attack killed 139 people in Karachi in October.

Lawson, a former Australian fast bowler, said he has felt “incredibly safe” since he started a two-year term as national coach in July.

However, he admits general elections on January 8 have the potential to spark unrest.

“Not for one second have I felt unsafe in Pakistan, so far. But the elections in January could change things,” Lawson told an Australian newspaper on Wednesday.

“Nobody really knows what’s going to happen after that. It could be a different kettle of fish and there could be a lot of public agitation and a lot of trouble. Or it could be perfectly safe.

“At the moment you can’t guarantee anything and you can’t guarantee what the security situation will be after January.”
