Younis Khan wants powerful captain’s role
Former vice-captain of the Pakistan cricket team, Younis Khan, is ready to replace Inzamam-ul-Haq as the captain but he wants the same powers and authority which Inzamam enjoyed during his captaincy tenure.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Dr Nasim Ashraf, wanted to announce the name of Younis Khan as captain in his press conference held few days ago in Lahore but Younis requested at the eleventh hour that he does not want to be a powerless skipper, a PCB official, also the close associate of the PCB chairman, told PPI on condition of anonymity.
He told that during an unexpected meeting of Dr Nasim Ashraf with former captain Imran Khan in Islamabad, he (Imran) also asked the PCB chief to announce the name of Younis as the future captain and the PCB chairman agreed on that.
In the meantime, Dr Nasim also held a telephone talk with Younis asking him to accept the responsibilities as the captain but he simply refused.
According to the PCB chairman, Younis wants the full authority in team selection and also wanted the new coach (yet to be announced) to work under his guidance, the PCB official disclosed.
These demands are unacceptable, the official while quoting the PCB chairman as saying during the telephonic conservation with Younis.
Nasim, who was in Cape Town to attend the funeral of late coach Bob Woolmer, will reach Islamabad on Friday (today) and is scheduled to attend the valima reception of Younis to be held in his hometown (Mardan).
According to a PCB official, Nasim has decided to hold the final discussions on this issue with Younis in a couple of day’s time.
